My Mailbox

The days coasted by at a fast clip. June passed at a gallop, July whooshed at a run, August zoomed at a dash, and September whizzed at a sprint. And now, time went back to the same exact June.

“Puffing” and “scrunching” time seemed like Uncle Walter’s time-warping experiments. Time went backward and forward, repeatedly reviving the events prior to Rhubarb Pie’s disappearance. It appeared as an attempt to reverse history.

Not for the life of me had I the slightest idea about what was going on back at home. Not even a clue, because my journey in the City of @ continued to occupy my mind, dominating every aspect of my life.

I imagined, though, that Mom and Michael, my brother, were still immersed in agony and sorrow over the disappearance of Daddy, my sweet Rhubarb Pie. I knew Mom would definitely strive to fix our shattered lives, bring some sense of peace to the harsh reality, and hopefully, begin a long healing process.

And what about Uncle Walter? I wondered. What is he up to these days? Is he still consumed by his latest inventions and scientific experiments? I imagined he persisted in trying to perfect his time-warping capabilities: moving time back and forth — or even halting it. Probably he was also making significant strides in his virtual world project by creating unreal, imaginary realities.

And Emilia Parker, my best friend, what is she doing now? I assumed she was focusing on her school final exams. Perhaps, every so often, she was thinking about my strange departure. Maybe in her spare moments, she was even searching for me on the Internet…

And Eric Kinsley, my school buddy? I bet he’s still absorbed in building a small space exploration rover to be launched, as he always had aspired, at the Sun. Most certainly, Eric would have very little time to think about me. I doubted if he remembered our friendship that had started developing before the beginning of my voyage to find Rhubarb Pie.

I was certain that all of them were busy with their daily chores. Probably, they had very little time to dwell on my whereabouts. Perhaps their lives were too hectic to be engrossed in memories of our fading relationships.

No one was around that day. Loneliness is something that’s hard to bear, especially on a birthday. Not one person was around to celebrate the day I came into this world. Not a soul…

Friendless and tearful, I found myself in a chilly computer room immersed in thick haze. Sizzling, almost burning, hardworking spherical devices were suspended in the air. I was staring at hundreds and hundreds of colorful balls — strange spheres bouncing in midair. They were moving up and down in slow motion like squid in a fish tank.

The countless balls were connected by pipes — long and short translucent tubes, through which a rainbow of lights traveled at enormous speed.

What are these mysterious illuminated balls? I questioned. They looked like vibrant stars, talking to each other, communicating intensely in a language I could not understand.
